Nyaya Vartha – Hear the Law, Know Your Rights
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the most admired sports figures in the country, has successfully moved a step closer to legally owning his popular nickname “Captain Cool”. The Trade Marks Registry has accepted his trademark application and published it in the official journal, opening the path to full registration.

Dhoni, known for his calm demeanor under pressure and sharp cricketing mind, filed the trademark application in June 2023 under Class 41, which includes entertainment, sports training, coaching, and other related services. The application was examined by the Trade Marks Registry at Kolkata, which initially raised objections due to a similar application filed by another entity—Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd.
However, Dhoni’s legal team effectively countered the objection, arguing that “Captain Cool” has become uniquely associated with Dhoni in the minds of the public. They submitted that the nickname has acquired a distinctive secondary meaning, and is not merely a common phrase.
Taking into account Dhoni’s global stature and the public perception of the term, the examiner allowed the application to proceed. The mark has now been published in the Trade Marks Journal dated June 16, 2025, initiating a four-month opposition window. If no objections are raised during this period, Dhoni will receive the exclusive rights to use “Captain Cool” in the specified domain.
This trademark move is not just a legal formality—it reflects Dhoni’s intention to build a brand legacy beyond his cricketing career. From potential merchandise to sports academies, digital content, or media productions, the “Captain Cool” brand could soon extend into multiple domains.
The timing is significant, as Dhoni was recently inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career. With the trademark almost in his pocket, Dhoni is setting the groundwork to legally protect and commercially utilize his identity.
As the opposition window remains open until October 2025, all eyes will be on whether any challenges are raised. If the registration is finalized, Dhoni will join a rare league of Indian sportspersons who have successfully trademarked their public personas.
